It. Is. Time.
I'm sat on my lunch break at work reading LOADS of Tweets from friends in Orlando (not jealous, not one bit) and well...it's up to me to bring Celebration to you, through the method of compiling all the news! I'm aiming to update this as regularly as I can with the news from Celebration. This will mainly be concentrating on canon things, as you know, thats what this website is all about.
Let's get started shall we:
Star Wars: Forces of Destiny
Before Celebration has even begun we are being treated to something new and very exciting! Star Wars: Forces of Destiny was announced late last night as a series of animated shorts concentrating on the women of the galaxy far far away...
The stars of the characters will all be reprising their roles which is very exciting and there is a magic touch of Maz Kanata narrating the series with the silky tones of Lupita N'yong'o behind the microphone. And yes...these shorts are classed as canon.
Most of all, this is a celebration of what female characters are bringing to Star Wars and I couldn't be happier about this! Good start celebration week-end, good start!
40 Year Anniversary
The 40 year anniversary panel was a sight to behind as many of the cast joined George Lucas, Kathleen Kennedy and Warwick Davis to reminisce and talk about the effect of this wonderful saga over the years.
The one cast member that was obviously missing was the late and very great Carrie Fisher. The tribute below is simply beautiful...
Star Wars: The Last Jedi
Here we go folks, this is obviously the biggest draw of Celebration 2017 and boy did it deliver...above you see the poster for the film and below, well here is the teaser. Need I say more?
Wow. To me, it answers absolutely no questions and raises a whole load more! It obviously gives us nothing but a lot of the shots deserve to be deep dived into (were those books the Guardian of the Whills or the Memoirs of Obi-Wan?), which I shall leave for another website (looking at you EW).
For me, the strength of Star Wars is in the progression of its characters, it looks like Rian Johnson is setting us on the right course. Am I excited? You bet.
Book Announcements: Saturday
Remember Phasma? That underused character in The Force Awakens? Overlooked no more my friends because Marvel and Del Rey have just made two huge announcements about the lady in chrome.
Yup! We are getting a series of Journey to Star Wars: The Last Jedi literature. The first to be officially announced are a novel AND comic series about Captain Phasma.
The comic series will be four issues set between Episode 7 and 8 which hopefully will give us a huge insight into what the First Order were getting up to post Episode 7.
Very scant details on the novel so far but I will add more as soon as we get it. My assumption will be the story of how she became Captain Phasma, but that is just pure speculation.
That isn't it...
Claudia Grey is back! Arguably the most popular author within the new canon is getting a new YA book all about our favourite princess...Leia.
What about Luke? Well, he's covered, his legend to be exact in a book written by Ken Liu.
The second cover (although not final) and title, Escape from Vodran, of the Join the Resistance books was unveiled today. This will continue on from the cliff hanger ending of the first.
...and finally! IDW publishing is going to be publishing a series of comics aimed at children from across the whole saga. The launch title that'll come in the autumn of this year will be part of the Journey to Star Wars: The Last Jedi. So yes - it's canon! (My poor poor wallet).
Star Wars Rebels: Season 4
Shall jump straight in with the trailer:
Beautifully narrated by Vanessa Marshall (Hera) this is a fine introduction to a the new and final season of Star Wars Rebels. I'm delighted they've announced the fact it'll be the last at this point as it gives us (mainly me) time to say goodbye, as well as the creative team moments to create a finale that will be one for the ages.
The season is also a lot shorter at 15 episodes, (less filler some may say), with a more episodic feel to them. Dave Filoni has told IGN that "Season 4 is unlike any other we've ever done in that, at a certain point, a couple of episodes in, it's more one continuous story." For me, that sounds perfect.
I would say I'm looking forward to it, but, it may be a very very sad ending.
Star Wars: Battlefront II
As well as Star Wars, I do love me a bit of gaming and I did enjoy all of what Battlefront had to offer when it became the full game (don't get me started). Anyway, they're not doing a season pass for Battlefront II and they are doing space battles and a single player campaign. It's as if they listened to their fan base and then acted on it!
Now, that single player campaign? Yes, it's canon and yes it focuses on an Imperial crack team of stormtroopers. Sound familiar? Should do, as this is the same team that will be focused on in Christie Golden's up and coming novel Inferno Squad. (more on that later).
Now that single player campaign. It'll span over 30 years, from ROTJ to The Force Awakens, you play as Iden Versio, the leader of the Inferno Squad. Within this campaign you shall meet some of the more famous characters of the saga, including Luke Skywalker and Kylo Ren. (remember, this is canon). During the trailer we see both the Empire and the First Order, so we should learn more about the transition. This should hopefully tie very nicely together with Chuck Wendigs' Empire's End which had the Empire fleeing through Unknown Regions to find a new home.
Also, couple of things. You play as the bad guys and we have another female lead! This is most excellent. Want to know more about her...well check this out.
This is the most beautiful cover in Star Wars canon so far and this is where we get to know Iden Versio and her commanders personally. Christie Golden, author of the fabulous Dark Disciple, is going to pen a prelude as sorts to the Battlefront II campaign. Genuinely so excited!
